Maurice Utrillo spent much of his life in the hilly Parisian neighborhood of Montmartre, where he was born. The picturesque area was a quiet haven for artists from the 1870s until around 1914, when its popularity drew more crowds and inspired a bustling nightlife of cafés, dance venues, and cabarets like the Lapin Agile (the Nimble Rabbit). What Utrillo shows here, however, is a quiet street corner devoid of the activity of modern life, perhaps reflecting a nostalgia for a time past.
