Matisse made this still life during a stay in Collioure, a medieval town on France's Mediterranean coast. He assembled various products from the region for the painting, including two painted earthenware plates, a carafe, a dark vase, a bowl, a watermelon, and a red shawl. Also depicted is the original plaster of Matisse's own bronze Standing Nude (1908–9; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). Matisse frequently incorporated his own sculpture into his paintings; see, for example, his Studio with Goldfish in Room 19.
