Henri Matisse's love of decoration is evident here, as the patterned tablecloth and wallpapers flow together into a dizzying composition that almost crowds out the figures. The dark-haired model is Henriette Darricarrère, an aspiring actress and dancer who posed frequently for Matisse during the 1920s.
