FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG

This tiny painting by the German artist known as Wols is perhaps the most abstract work in the collection, and one of the last objects Albert Barnes purchased before his death in 1951. Wols moved to Paris in 1932 and worked as a photographer. After being imprisoned for 14 months World War II (for his German citizenship), he turned his focus to oils and watercolors.
