Best known for his figure painting, Amedeo Modigliani saw himself principally as a sculptor, which is evident in his sculptural treatment of the human figure in his paintings and drawings. He created more than 70 depictions of caryatids, sculptural female figures used traditionally as architectural supports for a temple, in a variety of media, reflecting his interest in the sculpture of Africa, ancient Greece, and Southeast Asia.
