FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG

Demuth visited Bermuda in 1916–17, and while there he painted a breakthrough series of landscapes inspired by cubism and the works of Cézanne. This waterside scene centers on a gnarled tree, whose boughs spin out toward a jumble of bungalows and a pinwheel of palm fronds. The overlapping planes—plus the lightness of Demuth's touch and palette—evidence the artist's love of vitality and ambiguity.
