A dancer in a sharp gray suit performs at Marshall's Hotel, a Black-owned establishment in New York. Marshall's was a major center of African American cultural and intellectual life in the city during the early 20th century. Many white patrons also came here to experience the musical performances, discussions, and other events that would lay the foundation for the Harlem Renaissance. Demuth made this watercolor after Marshall's closed in 1913, offering a retrospective look at a place key to the birth of American modernism.
