Born in Bulgaria, Pascin spent most of his life in Paris. He is primarily known for his sensual nudes and shimmering backgrounds. While Pascin often painted pairs of women, this work is unusual in its inclusion of a young boy. The relationship between the two figures is hard to understand: the boy's body is turned toward the woman, yet his face looks down and away, implying a psychological distance between them.
