FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG
Of the 181 works in the collection by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Albert Barnes identified this one as his favorite. The canvas dates from Renoir's late period, when he focused on timeless Arcadian themes instead of the contemporary urban and suburban motifs of his earlier impressionist works. In a 1924 letter Dr. Barnes wrote that the painting represents "the summation of [Renoir's] powers."
