Several figures sit and stroll under leafy trees, while a stately oceanfront house with green shutters and a terra-cotta-tiled roof is visible in the background. Behind them, the blue seawater sparkles in the sunshine. A pioneer of American modernism, Prendergast presents the scene as a network of high-keyed colors, blending sources ranging from medieval mosaics to recent depictions of the utopian Arcadia by French neoimpressionists.
