Set at Saint-Malo in Brittany, France, Beach and Village features a crowded beach, blue and yellow beach cabins, and houses nestled into the hillside. In his many beach scenes Prendergast embraced both the timeless quality of the ocean as an artistic subject as well as its role in modern life. The water, land, and buildings emerge from nearly architectonic patches of color, evidence of his interest in adapting techniques from avant-garde French artists such as Paul Cézanne.
