A figure stands on the rocky shore of the Bagaduce River in Brooksville, Maine, gesturing to someone in a rowboat. The tall ship farther out in the river suggests the scene's proximity to the bay; houses and hills occupy the distant shore. The impasto patches of color with which Prendergast constructed the land, sky, and water speak to his interest in adapting techniques from avant-garde French artists, such as Paul Cézanne, to images of American life.
