FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG

When Albert Barnes acquired this portrait in 1929, it was believed to be a work by the Italian Renaissance painter Pinturicchio (d. 1513). However, details such as the sitter's haircut and the shape of his hat are not typical of Pinturicchio's era. A forger may have painted the fresco to sell in the art market, or it could have been made by a student attempting to learn Italian fresco technique.
