Here Soutine presents a monastic church or chapel against a lilac sky. The building's architectural simplicity—the modest Romanesque style of southern France—is offset by the lurid red of the roof and trim. The writhing, leafless trees and dark windows, staring out like hollow eyes, give the scene an ominous, almost haunting, quality.
