Cézanne returned to the Jas de Bouffan, near Aix-en-Provence, in 1890–91 after a vacation with his wife and son around Europe. During this time he painted a number of depictions of the surrounding landscape, including this picture, in which a house seems to disappear behind a wall of trees and reddish-orange earth.
