The Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico was born in Greece and drew much of his inspiration from ancient Mediterranean sources. In this painting, de Chirico depicts Alexander the Great and his war horse Bucephalus standing on a beach, perhaps moments before departing to conquer nearby lands. Included in the artist's 1936 solo exhibition in New York City, this painting resonates with his other works that portray horses on the seashore.
