FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG
Dr. Albert C. Barnes acquired and arranged all the works in these galleries between 1912 and 1951. The Italian surrealist Giorgio de Chirico painted this portrait in 1926, a year after Dr. Barnes opened his original building in Merion. De Chirico and Dr. Barnes had become friends after Dr. Barnes bought several of the artist's works, and the painting reflects this relationship. A framed painting by de Chirico is visible in the background, probably an allusion to the canvas now in Room 6, which Dr. Barnes had just purchased.
