A small pile of strawberries and some leafy unpeeled almonds rests on an undulating white cloth. The orange-red background matches the strawberries' glowing flesh and accentuates the horizontality of the canvas. The scene may evoke a reclining nude: Renoir wrote that he painted botanical subjects as "research of flesh tones," and that he wanted to paint women "like beautiful fruits."
