Toulouse, in the South of France, this color study speaks to Matisse's engagement with Paul Signac's written account of the legacy and practice of pointillism, From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-impressionism , which appeared in serial form in 1898. Matisse grappled with Signac's divisionist theory of color contrasts. This ultimately evolved into Fauvism and the artist's unique approach to color application, focusing on bold planes of color rather than systematized dots or dashes.
