FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG

After World War I, Braque and Picasso never resumed the close artistic collaboration that had resulted in the development of cubism. Here Braque continues to explore the cubist emphasis on the two-dimensional surface of the canvas. Using typical objects of the still-life tradition—glass, fruit, tablecloth, and knife—Braque achieves a shallow space, flattening and overlapping the presented items.
