Charlet's first lithographs, entirely of military subjects, were executed while he was studying under Baron Gros. While the Bourbon Restoration excluded works celebrating Napoleon from the official Salons, prints of veterans from the Napoleonic army were very widely circulated, contributing to the formation of the Napoleonic legend. Here Charlet celebrates the tenacity, spirit, and bravery of the foot soldiers who served under Napoleon.
