When Albert Barnes purchased this painting in 1928, it was attributed to the Venetian Renaissance artist Titian. Recent scholarship suggests the portrait is instead by a member of the school of Alessandro Bonvicino, known as Moretto, who worked in Brescia, a city in Lombardy under the influence of Venice. The unknown sitter and his son are shown in half-length in front of a neutral background. Patrician families commissioned such portraits such as a reflection of their stature.
