FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG

This canvas is a part of a series of paintings (including two other canvases hung nearby) produced by Hartley during a period in which he shared a studio with his close friend and fellow artist Charles Demuth. They spent the summer of 1916 in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and traveled to Bermuda in the winter of 1916–17. The flat, geometric planes represent a sailboat, with the mast, hull, and sail rendered in a muted color palette specific to this period of Hartley's career.
