FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG

This painting's title refers to a troupe of British dancers who became famous performing synchronized routines in New York City theaters around the turn of the 20th century. Glackens, who lived in New York for many years, painted this canvas in his Washington Square studio. One critic described seeing it there in 1910: "Glackens has in his studio . . . a large canvas, a study of some girls, possibly vaudeville 'artistes,' on which he daily practices his colored scales, trills and arpeggios."
