A painter of Roman landscapes and history subjects, Breenbergh arrived in Rome in 1619 and founded the Netherlandish artists' fraternity there in 1623. Returning to Amsterdam, he made about thirty small etchings around 1639-40. This is one of a series of seventeen devoted to "Various ruined buildings within and without Rome."
