FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG

In his street scenes, landscapes, and interiors, Robert Lotiron focused on the humble rituals of daily life. Much like Cézanne, Lotiron perceived a certain geometry in everyday subjects, and translated his figures and objects into simplified shapes and forms. Muted in color, this painting of two men playing a game of backgammon has a stillness to it—a slowness—that perhaps speaks to the quiet rhythms of daily life.
