FROM THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO’S CATALOG

Friedrich was one of the central figures of German romanticism. In the historical and nationalist spirit of the era, he turned back to early German print­making as a model for the use of the woodcut medium as an independent art form. These wood­cuts reflect the romantic interest in nature and time.
