FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG

This rustic scene actually depicts a location within the city of Paris, which still included patches of farmland at the time Utrillo painted this work. The building in the foreground is the former hunting lodge of King Henri IV of France. The white pointed dome behind the structure is the Basilica of Sacré Coeur, a monumental church in the hilltop neighborhood of Montmartre. Utrillo likely painted this scene from a contemporary postcard, something he did frequently.
