Scholars continue to debate the identity of this artist and the original source of the painting. The small coat of arms and initials at the bottom have not yet been identified. The arms may refer to a family, a city, or a bishopric. The style seems to relate to Bruges painting of the early 1500s, however the slightly mannered treatment of the child may point to Antwerp.
