This carefree summertime scene brimming with vacationers is set against the beach of Moulin Huet Bay on the Channel Island of Guernsey. Renoir spent a little over a month on the island from September to early October in 1883. While most of Renoir's Guernsey paintings feature voyeuristic depictions of bathing women and men, here he captures children at play. The rapid notation of the overall brushwork and generalized landscape elements suggest that the artist executed this painting in the studio. Renoir may have intended it as a study, as it remained in his possession until his death.
