In 1907, Renoir bought a property in the south of France called Les Collettes, where he lived for the rest of his life. He frequently painted the estate's old farmhouse, usually seen through a grove of olive and orange trees and other verdant plantings. In this small, fluid sketch, Renoir bisects the farmhouse with an orange tree; to the right of the trunk is an arched doorway outlined in white that anchors the composition and pulls the viewer into this sunny Mediterranean scene.
