The knickknack peddler is a motif frequently featured in Chinese paintings. It has been celebrated for its meticulous depictions of various goods and the lively portrayals of the peddler and the young boys. On this object, the playful scene where the peddler eagerly approaches his young customers and carelessly leaves his goods unattended is captured through richly carved ivory. While adhering to the conventional composition of this scene in paintings, the circular shape of the medallion and the intricate relief carvings on the sumptuous ivory surface infuse this familiar image with a distinct dynamism. The reverse side of the medallion is decorated with carved floral patterns. The three small holes at the center indicate that the object was probably strung and hung, yet its precise function remains unknown.
