FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG
This diminutive and intimate still life is among the first purchases of works by Cézanne that Albert C. Barnes made in 1912. This painting was once part of a larger still life; its six-and-one-half-inch height and the fact that the brushwork continues to the edges of the work suggest that it was cut down on all four sides. The original canvas was either one of Cézanne's horizontal compositions from the period or a collection of studies designed in advance to be cut down, possibly by the dealer Père Tanguy.
