Renoir found endless inspiration in painting his children, and his second son, Jean, born in the fall of 1894, was one of his favorite models. Between 1895 and 1910, Renoir made about 60 paintings and pastels of his son. Here we see Jean as a baby with his golden locks and rosy cheek and lips. This sketch is closely related to a larger painting of baby Jean with his nanny Gabrielle playing with toy animals ( Gabrielle and Jean , 1895–96; Musée de l'Orangerie, Paris).
