At the beginning of the 20th century, Dufy was part of the Fauves du Havre, a group of expressionist painters whose works focused on the leisure society of Normandy's popular seaside resorts. This interwar painting of a sailboat race testifies to his enduring interest in the motif. Freed from naturalism, Dufy developed a unique style in which he sketched simple but easily recognizable silhouettes before adding bright and saturated colors that overflowed from the loose outlines.
