FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG
In this charming portrait Renoir depicts his youngest son and one of his favorite subjects, Claude, or "Coco," born in 1901. The artist's oldest son, Jean, once said that "Coco certainly proved one of the most prolific inspirations my father ever had." Indeed, Renoir captured Claude in at least 90 canvases—three of which belong to the Barnes Foundation. Unlike other Renoir portraits, which often depict children engaged in activity, this example shows a perfectly poised and patient sitter.
