FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG

Between January 22 and 26, Reclining Nude with Blue Eyes went through four different states. The different states replaced one another on the same canvas, but each could have been conceived as a finished painting in itself. Matisse encouraged this view in permitting and even promoting their reproduction.
