Degas made dozens of sketches in pastel and charcoal of the toilette theme of a woman bathing in a tub. The artist was known to collect Japanese woodblock prints, including one depicting a bathhouse in which the poses of the female figures reflect the sometimes awkward reality of bathing versus an idealized one. Here Degas portrays the effort necessary to lift or lower one's body in and out of the tub, a treatment consistent with the artist's agenda of exploring the human body in motion.
