FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG

Rohland's rainbow bouquet of zinnias and poppies is a modern rendition of the 19th-century botanical art also displayed in this room. Dr. Barnes bought Flower Piece in 1920, after a memorable encounter with Rohland's work. He wrote to the artist, "I've just as vivid a sense of your monotypes this morning as I had when I saw them on Sunday... So I enclose a check, leaving it to you whether you send me five or six of them including [ Flower Piece ]."
