This painting was likely created by an artist in the circle of Gerard David, the influential Netherlandish painter who ran workshops in Bruges and Antwerp during the early 16th century. The Christ Child holds a set of rosary beads between his hands while the Virgin Mary holds an apple, an allusion to the forbidden fruit offered to Adam and also a symbol of the sins of mankind.
