Here Cézanne depicts a view of Montigny-sur-Loing, a small medieval village situated on a river about 50 miles southeast of Paris. The building looming over the rooftops is a parish church built in the 12th century that still stands today. The striking diagonal in the foreground actually represents a tree rooted on a small piece of land. Cézanne flattens out the vista so that the river, the bank, and the distant buildings all appear on one continuous plane.
