FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG

Raimondo comes from a period in Modigliani's career when he was exploring a variety of techniques and styles. At this time, he was sensitive to the influence of Cubism—evident here in the decomposition of the background and vertical splitting of the man's face into two asymmetrical halves. The artist's dynamic pencil marks range from the fine, delicate strokes on the figure's cheek to the broad, darker marks behind his neck, imparting variances in value and texture. The title likely refers to Dr. Raymond Barrieu (1889–1969), whom Modigliani depicted in another portrait from 1916.
