FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG
A monumental apple sits in what appears to be silver water, silhouetted by a zigzag backdrop and a blue patch of sky that opens like a door. Insight into this dreamy scene might be found in a treatise by the artist titled "This Is the Philosophy of Jean Lurcat," in which he explains his work in the third person, through the voice of Dr. Barnes. After World War I, "the Doctor" states, Lurcat "abandoned all the dead things of the war and began to live, [and] started to occupy himself with the abstract."
