Matisse met the model for this painting, Antoinette Arnoud, in January 1919. She would become his preferred model and an inspiration for much of his work for the next two and a half years. Arnoud, wearing a blue-gray dressing gown edged in purple, sits by an open window reading a book. She leans her elbow on a table laden with objects—a carafe of water, beauty products in front of a mirror—that reinforce the sense of her solitary reverie and contemplation.
