FROM THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO’S CATALOG

Considered the last of the great Roman painters, Maratta came to Rome in 1636, and began to make etchings in 1647. Only thirteen prints are known to be by his hand; the religious sentiment of this plate is characteristic of them.
