FROM THE CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF ART’S CATALOG

By 1509 color prints were successfully produced by printing the line block in black but using a second block to print the background color. Unprinted areas of white paper formed the highlights. Wechtlin’s The Knight and Lansquenet is a beautiful example of this technique.
