Italian-born Carmen Rossi began posing for Whistler in Paris in 1892. Reputedly the subject of this transfer lithograph, Rossi modeled for other Whistler prints, drawings, and paintings and, from 1898 to 1901, ran Académie Carmen, an art school the artist established for her. During the 1890s Rossi also posed for students at the Académie Julian and for the American artist Alice Pike Barney, who studied at the Académie Carmen.
