Though his mobility declined in the years before his death in 1919, Renoir continued to paint landscapes in the vicinity of his home at Les Collettes in Cagnes-sur-Mer. In this canvas, the hot climate of the South of France smolders in the golden highlights on the grasses and trees of the foreground. Just visible on the horizon, at the point where rock and sky meet, are the soothing azure, violet, and aqua blues of the Mediterranean. Renoir pulls this cooling thread through the houses perched on the hill and the trees of the middle ground, which bend and sway in the heat of the day.
