FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG
William Glackens's son Ira wrote that his father never arranged flowers for his compositions. Instead, Glackens would discover them positioned about the house by his wife, Edith, and then take them into his studio. A blue-and-yellow pitcher seems barely to contain these bold, elegant blossoms. Flowers overpower the pitcher; only a portion of the handle is visible. Complementary colors set in juxtaposition—orange tulips against blue pottery, teal green leaves opposite mauve peonies—help create the canvas's vibrancy.
