FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG

A young woman, absorbed in thought or prayer, clasps a rosary with silver and gold beads. She wears a dark fur-lined dress with gold braid at the waist, a cross, a large gold chain, and a white headdress, and her forehead is adorned with an exquisitely painted glass bead. The Latin inscription at the top left notes that the subject died in 1499, meaning that this portrait was painted for the memory of her loved ones.
